Anjana Vidya Kendra School
Brahmi established its first school, Anjana, on the outskirts of Bangalore, India in 2001. Through the hard work of dedicated individuals, Anjana now provides education to approximately 250 children who would otherwise have no formal learning opportunities. In the process of educating children, families have been transformed, and the community has been strengthened.
Anjana represents the collaboration and coming together of an entire community. The land for the school was donated by a local villager, the school buildings were built by a few friends who pooled their savings, and the school is run daily with the help of volunteers. Several individuals sponsor nutritional and educational programs, and the school is sustained in-part by the generous support of corporate sponsors.
Anjana was started as a primary / elementary school and currently educates children from pre-school through 7th grade. Children who began with Anjana in kindergarten have now successfully completed elementary school. To ensure that these children continue their education through high school (10th grade) three new grades have been added. The school has received approval from the government of Karnataka to begin a new high school. The first year of high school (8th grade) has started and has been temporarily accommodated within the current infrastructure while a permanent plan is implemented.
Education without consideration to local issues will be useless and therefore, ineffective. Brahmi recognizes that the education the schools impart deviates children from their parental vocation of farming. After high school, not all students are equipped to continue on to college. Some may simply continue through pre-college. Others will stop education at the end of high school. These children have already come too far from their parental vocation, yet neither can they continue with higher education. Thousands end up in a state of being unemployed or unemployable.
Therefore, enrollment of students is just the beginning. It is critical to prevent children from dropping out AND to ensure they develop the proper skills to either continue with higher education or to effectively carve out a life in the village.
